Key Stage 5

Geography

This Key Stage is delivered across two years.  This is an optional subject.

Time

Students will have nine periods of Geography every fortnight. They will have two teachers who will divide topics between them.  For more information about the course content, please ask your Geography Teacher or look on the AQA website. 

Exam Information for Year 13

Students are studying the AQA Geography GCE specification.

Paper 1 - Physical and Human Geography (35% of A Level)

Students will study the topics below and take a written examination in the Summer of Year 12. Students will be required to answer questions from four sections; one for each of the topics studied. Both structured short questions and extended questions will feature on the paper. The paper is two hours long.

  • Population change
  • Cold environments
  • Health issues

Paper 2 - Geographical Skills (15% of A Level)

Students will study the topics below and take a written paper in the Summer of Year 12. Students will be requied to answer structured skills and generic fieldwork questions. The paper is one hour long.

  • Fieldwork application

Paper 3 -  Contemporary Geographical Issues (30% of A Level)

Students will study the topics below and take a written paper in the Summer of Year 13. Students will be required to answer structured short questions and extended questions. In addition they will need to write an essay. The paper is 2 hours and 30 minutes long.

  • Weather and climate and associated hazards
  • World cities
  • Contemporary conflicts and challenges

 

Paper 4 - Geography Fieldwork Investigation (20% of A Level)

Students will study the topics below and take a written paper in the summer of Year 13. Students will be required to answer structured short questions and extended questions. Several of these will be based on students' fieldwork investigation and fieldwork skills. The paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long.

EXAM INFORMATION FOR YEAR 12

Students will be studying the AQA Geography GCE specification.

If pupils take this subject to A-Level (as opposed to AS), they will ultimately sit two exams both lasting 2½ hours and both worth 40%. In addition to this they will produce an individual investigation of approximately 4000 words that will be marked by their teacher and moderated by the Board. The structure of the full A-Level is:

Component 1 : Physical Geography (40% of A Level)

Topics covered:

  • Water & Carbon Cycles
  • Glacial Systems & Landscapes
  • Hazards

Component 2 : Human Geography (40% of A Level)

Topics covered:

  • Global systems & Global Governance
  • Changing places
  • Urban Environments or Population and the Environment or Resource Security

Component 3 : Geography Fieldwork Investigation (20% of A Level)

• Individual investigation worth 60 marks

If pupils take this subject to AS Level, they will sit two exams. The first paper will test their understanding of Glacial Systems & Hazards whilst the second paper will cover Changing Places & Geographical Skills / Fieldwork.
