Key Stage 4 Product Design

GCSE Product Design Examining board: OCR

Course overview

This GCSE has four units:

  • Unit 1 (A551) Controlled Assessment (CW with a research and design focus) 30%
  • Unit 2 (A532) Innovation Challenge Exam 20%
  • Unit 3 (A533) Controlled Assessment (CW with a making and marketing focus) 30%
  • Unit 4 (A534) Design Influences Exam 20%

Units 1 & 3 - folder work will be produced electronically and design work will be a mixture of hand drawn and CAD. Students will be given a choice of themes to select their project from and can choose to focus on Resistant Materials or Graphics.

Unit 2 - this is a practical exam. Students will spend 6 hours (3 hours on two days) working through a project brief. They will have strict timings and rules and the exam will be overseen by an invigilator. Again the brief that each student chooses to focus on can be Resistant Materials or Graphics.

Unit 4 - this exam is a mixture of a written product analysis exam and a designing exam. There is also a section focusing on famous designers and the impact their designs have had.

Students can choose to complete Controlled Assessments (coursework) and Exam questions in their chosen focus area - this will be either Resistant Materials or Graphics.

This GCSE leads directly into the OCR A Level Product Design course which again is suitable for students interested in either Resistant Materials or Graphic Products.
