Outline of Year 10 for the new English Language and Literature Pathway

Autumn 1

Writing Skills for Language Exam

Focused two week unit on writing skills: spelling, punctuation, sentence variety and vocabulary building.  This is designed to set the standard expected for writing and establish the examination’s new focus on written accuracy and variety.

Literature Paper 2 – 19th Century Novel

Pupils begin their study of the 19th century novel: Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein or A Christmas Carol.  The focus will be on plot, character, setting and theme. 

Language Paper 1 – Unseen 19th Century Fiction Extracts

The study of the novel should also be used as an opportunity to practice the unseen extract skills.  Extracts from the novel should be used as unseen exam extract skills practice.  One lesson a week will be used for developing these skills.

 

Autumn 2

CONTINUE Literature Paper 2 – 19th Century Novel

The exam question is split into two parts:

 

  • close analysis of a printed extract
  • linking an idea from the extract to the wider novel
Language Paper 1 - Imaginative Writing

The study of the novel should also be used as an opportunity to practice imaginative writing skills.

Revision of skills from the start of the year and focus on figurative language that has been covered in study of the novel.

Language Paper 1 – Unseen 19th Century Fiction Extracts

Students will cover a range of unseen 19th Century extracts that link thematically with the 19th Century novel e.g. relevant settings, similar themes, similar genres.

 

Spring 1 

Language Paper 2 – Transactional Writing

Introduction of writing to inform and persuade with a focus on audience, purpose, form and SPaG.

Literature Paper 1 – Modern Text

Students will study the Modern Drama text with a focus on character, theme, setting and context.  The choice of texts are: Blood Brothers by Willy Russell, Journey’s End by R C Sherriff and An Inspector Calls by J B Priestley.

 

Spring 2

Literature Paper 1 – Modern Text

Students continue to study the Modern Drama text with a focus on character, theme, setting and context.

 

Summer 1

Revision for Paper 1 Language Mock Exam

Revising the Paper 1, 19th Century extract question and imaginative writing for the mock exam which takes place w/c 18th April.

For the mock, pupils will complete a full Language Paper 1 AND a Literature Paper 2 question on the Modern Text

Language Paper 2 – Comparing 20th/21st Century non-fiction

Pupils will complete a short unit focusing on the skill of comparing modern non-fiction revising the skills of information retrieval, inference and language/structure analysis.

 

Literature Paper 1 – Shakespeare

Pupils will study their Shakespeare play with a focus on character, theme, setting and context.  The choices of text are: Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing and Merchant of Venice.

 

Summer 2

 

Literature Paper 1 – Shakespeare

Pupils will continue to study their Shakespeare play with a focus on character, theme, setting and context.
