AS/A2 Home Economics: Food and Nutrition OCR

A love of food and an interest in the nutritional content of food is needed to enjoy this course. You will also need a desire to find out what motivates and influences the choices people make about food. This A' level has a strong sociology content as well as practical food preparation and the study of nutrition.

There are 2 units in year 12, AS Level
Unit G001: Society and Health
Unit G002: Resource Management - this contains practical food tasks.

There are 2 units in Year 13, A2
Unit G003: Home Economics: Food, Nutrition and Health, Investigative study, (coursework) containing practical food tasks.
Unit G004: Nutrition and Food Production

Year 12

The first unit Society and Health studies the following topics:
Demography: population trends
Family and society; changes in family structure
Key issues for society; poverty, unemployment, homelessness
Environmental Issues; recycling
Social Issues; The welfare state
Health; health education

The second unit Resource Management studies
Management of resources: money management
Food provision: Practical work based on food choice
The selection and purchase of household goods: consumer rights
Food preparation and cooking equipment: Practical testing of equipment
Food safety and hygiene: Food Safety and the law

Year 13

The first unit is an Investigative task (coursework) very similar to that completed by Year 11 GCSE Home Economics students. The title is developed by the candidate although suggested topics are available up to 3000 words.

The second unit Nutrition and Food Production covers the following topics:
Introduction to nutrition: balanced diet
Nutrients and energy: vitamins, minerals etc
Groups with nutritional and dietary needs: the elderly, coeliacs etc
Properties of food: nutritional content, aerating etc
Design, development and production of food: product development
Developments in the food industry: technology, equipment, preservatives etc

How will you be taught?

You must enjoy practical cookery and the study of food and nutrition and an interest in people, their lifestyles and health.

Year 12
Unit G001 50% of the total AS Level 25% of A2
1.5 hr written paper
Unit G002 50% of the total AS Level 25% of A2
1.5hr written paper

Year 13
Unit G003 Coursework 25% of A2
Unit G004 1.5hr written paper 25% of A2

What can you do with this subject?

This qualification provides a suitable foundation for further study in Food Technology, Food Product Development, Nutritional Science, Dietetics, Events Management, Sports Science and Diet, Consumer protection, and Food Retail and Manufacture.
