Arden: preparing you for a world of opportunity

House System

The House System at Arden continues to be immensely popular amongst the students as it allows them to enjoy themselves and be competitive in the ever increasing stressful and results orientated education system. Its main purpose is to help produce happy, confident and competitive students who take pride in their Houses and more importantly feel they are a part of Arden Academy. Whether they collect merits, are a House Representative or represent their house in the many competitions that are on offer, students enjoy the opportunity to contribute. Most importantly the House System allows students to learn beyond the classroom.

The overall system is organised and run by Mr Pillinger with each House having House Heads to assist with the organising of each House. Houses are as follows:

  • Aylward
  • Baird
  • Eliot
  • Fleming

Each house consists of two forms from each year group. Form tutors also take an active role in helping with the House System. The Houses are a mixture of students of all ages and they all contribute to the House events. Points are awarded to Houses for various aspects in each event, for turning out, winning and effort. Pupils are also awarded merits for their contribution around Arden, whether that is in lessons, during break times or at extra-curricular clubs. This is an important part of the Rewards and Sanctions Policy at Arden. Students that collect merits help their House in the competition while others that misbehave find merits taken away from them thus inhibiting their House.

In the last academic year students took part in no fewer than thirty activities, ranging from team activities such as football, cross country, tennis, netball, basketball, quizzes, science experiments, tug of war to individual events such as poetry writing, photographic competitions, drawing and painting, music, drama and cooking. Sports Day is also a whole Academy event in the summer which sees the Houses competing in many different track and field events.

The House System at Arden has evolved to meet the needs of students in the twenty-first century and will continue to do so in the years to come in order to help the students receive a rounded, and more importantly, enjoyable education.

All students have a house colour on their blazer so they know where their allegiances lie and every time they take part in an event they are awarded one house cap. These accumulate and on reaching designated land mark figures – 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 students are awarded special colours with the landmark number on them to show the number of times they have represented their house. Also, each student is awarded a special certificate and a voucher to celebrate their success.
